Chelsea said they had terminated the employment of commercial director Damien Willoughby with immediate effect after it was discovered he had sent an "inappropriate message" ahead of his Premier League appointment.
Willoughby began working at Chelsea earlier this month after the club was acquired by an investment group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
"Evidence of inappropriate messages sent by Mr Willoughby prior to his appointment to Chelsea FC earlier this month was recently submitted to the club and is being investigated," a club spokesman told Reuters.
"Although he was sent to the club prior to his appointment, such behavior is in stark contrast to the work environment and corporate culture created by the club's new owner."
Willoughby has yet to respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
The Telegraph reported that Willoughby had been texting a football financial agent since last year. According to the report, Willoughby's attorneys declined to comment.
